This website is an effort to raise public awareness and support for protecting rare white deer in Virginia.
White deer are beautiful and rare creatures, a unique occurrence in nature. Some estimates put white deer at one in every twenty thousand. Unfortunately, their beauty and rarity make them targets for trophy hunters.
A number of states have laws prohibiting the shooting of white deer. Virginia is not one of them.
One rationale for allowing the shooting of white deer is that they are genetically inferior and weak and lack defenses from natural predators. These claims have not been substantiated.
In Wisconsin, one of the states with laws protecting white deer, white deer are known to live as long as fourteen years, and there are numerous reports of other hearty white deer surviving for at least that many years.
To protect white deer is to protect one of the rare natural treasures in our state.
